Boone is the county seat and principal city of Boone County, Iowa, situated in Des Moines Township. Historically a major coal mining center dating back to 1849, the city of approximately 12,424 is the home of the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad, which operates historic train excursions, and the Des Moines Area Community College Boone Campus. Local parks include McHose Park, and the city is served by the Boone Community School District.
