Bootjack, CA

Bootjack sits in the Sierra foothills south of Mariposa, at about 2,264 feet along the Highway 49 corridor. It began as a Gold Rush mining camp in 1849, then served as a stage stop on the road toward Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley. Later timber, small-scale mining, and farming gave the settlement a longer life than the first rush, while the highway brought a newer pattern of visitors and roadside commerce.

Mariposa County Fire Company 37 is still based alongside Highway 49 South, covering Bootjack, Woodland, and Bronco Hollow with neighboring companies backing up the surrounding foothills. That practical fire-service presence fits the community's setting: wooded roads, scattered homes, old mining traces, and a highway carrying people toward Yosemite country. Mariposa is the county seat nearby, but Bootjack has its own name on the map and its own chapter in the Gold Country story. It is a foothill crossroads shaped by the road, the trees, and the memory of the mines.
