Bracey, VA

Bracey is a Mecklenburg County census-designated place built around an old ferry crossing, a railroad stop, and the Lake Gaston country. The earlier settlement was called Saint Tammany, a name tied to the Roanoke River ferry; when the railroad arrived in 1900, the station and post office took the shorter Bracey name from local landowner Altamont Hart Bracey. A general store, depot, community center, and marina now mark the place's successive eras. Gaston Dam formed Lake Gaston in 1963, and Interstate 85 opened nearby in 1965, shifting Bracey's connections from river and rail toward highway and lake traffic. The old railroad line still shapes the street pattern, while Lake Gaston brings the water into the local picture. Bracey is a Virginia crossroads whose name changed as the transportation map changed.
