Brackettville, TX

Brackettville sits on U.S. 90 in Kinney County, with the old San Antonio–El Paso road still shaping how the town makes sense. Founded in 1852 as Las Moras, it served travelers and military traffic before taking its present name. Fort Clark, just south at Fort Clark Springs, brought a long cavalry chapter: units trained and served there, and the surrounding town supplied the post. That history still shows up in the historic district, the old military buildings, and the courthouse-town setting of a county seat.

Today the road points east toward Uvalde and west toward Del Rio, while Brackettville’s scale keeps daily life close to the school, courthouse, ranch country, and Fort Clark Springs. The former fort has been reused as a destination with restored buildings and open grounds, giving the community a visible connection to military history without turning the town into a museum piece. Brackett Independent School District serves local families, and ranching, livestock, wool, mohair, pecans, and hay remain part of the wider Kinney County economy. The town works as a practical base in a wide, dry corner of southwest Texas.
