Braham, MN

Braham sits across Isanti and Kanabec counties, about 12 miles north of Cambridge and along the Lower Stanchfield Branch. The city was founded in 1899, and a post office has operated here since 1891; railroad officials gave the place its name. The 2020 census counted 1,769 residents. Braham’s most recognizable nickname came much later: in 1990, Minnesota Governor Rudy Perpich declared it the Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota, a title the city turns into Pie Day each August.

That pie tradition is only one piece of a very active small-city calendar. Braham Area Schools serve local students, the city has six parks with a skate park, paths, courts, playgrounds, and a veterans memorial, and the Braham Event Center handles larger gatherings. The fire department’s Smelt Fry, Fourth of July fireworks, Appreciation Day, craft fair, and Santa Day keep the year moving from one local gathering to the next. Braham also sits within an hour of the Twin Cities, so it has a practical connection to the metro without losing its county-line, school-and-main-street scale. Come for the pie joke, and you quickly see the broader community underneath it.
