Branchville, SC

Branchville sits at the southern tip of Orangeburg County, and its name gives away the original transportation story: a railroad branch began here. Tracks reached the site in 1832, and a line to Orangeburg and Columbia created what South Carolina records describe as the country's oldest railroad junction. The town's wide streets, depot, and location between Charleston, Orangeburg, Columbia, and the Savannah River all grew from that early rail map. The depot and the tracks still give the town an unmistakable rail-era outline.

Branchville Depot, built in 1877, is now listed on the National Register and forms the heart of the Branchville Railroad Shrine and Museum. The town also keeps a community calendar around the annual Railroad Daze festival, built on trains, food, music, crafts, and the old depot story. Cotton and farm products once moved toward the coast by rail; today, highways carry most of the traffic, but the junction remains the detail that makes Branchville stand out in a county of small agricultural towns.
