Brandon, FL

Brandon is a large unincorporated community whose center is a corridor, not a municipal downtown. The 2020 census counted 114,626 residents within its census-designated boundary, while Hillsborough County provides local government. State Road 60, known locally as Brandon Boulevard, carries the main commercial spine east from Tampa. Interstate 75 and the Selmon Expressway meet that development on the west, and the most intensive retail, office, and service uses gather near their interchanges. The community-plan area reaches from the Broadway and U.S. 301 vicinity on the southeast toward the Alafia River and Lithia Pinecrest Road on the northwest. Brandon has no courthouse square or city hall, so major roads and dispersed destinations provide the clearest orientation. The name comes from John William Brandon, who arrived in 1857 with his wife, seven sons, and seven enslaved people and settled in a community then called New Hope.

After returning in 1874, he donated land for a school; in 1878, he gave land and a building for a Methodist church and cemetery. The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad changed the settlement in the early 1890s. Victoria Brandon hired railroad engineer Charles S. Noble to survey about 40 acres, and the plat filed on April 24, 1890, bore her husband's name. She established the post office in her home on September 15 of that year and served as its first postmaster. Brandon's present road-based form thus grew from an earlier rail stop and rural crossroads. Healthcare, college classes, county administration, and major retail are distributed along those corridors.

HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is a 479-bed acute-care hospital with adult and pediatric emergency departments and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. In June 2026, it opened an adjoining 70,000-square-foot medical office building for outpatient care. The following month, 63 new resident physicians began training there across six medical and surgical specialties. Hillsborough Community College's Brandon Campus adds classrooms and student activity, while the Falkenburg Road complex groups several county offices. Brandon Mall is both a regional shopping destination and a transit transfer point. On the HART system map effective June 7, 2026, Routes 24LX, 25LX, 38, and 360LX meet at the mall, with 360LX continuing toward downtown Tampa and South Tampa.

A hospital appointment, college class, county errand, mall visit, or bus transfer can lead to a different part of Brandon. The Sandy Rodriguez Center concentrates several civic uses at 619 Vonderburg Drive. Brandon Regional Library opened there in 1991 as a 25,000-square-foot branch, one of the county system's original regional libraries, and displays work by local artists. The same building houses Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association, a nonprofit founded in 1974. Its 300-seat auditorium, Mook Gallery, studios, and meeting rooms support theater, exhibitions, workshops, and community gatherings. With no municipal center elsewhere in Brandon, the shared building puts library stacks and gallery walls under one roof with classrooms, meeting rooms, and a working stage.
