Branford, FL

Branford grew on the Suwannee River where a ferry, sawmill, and river landing once carried the name Rowland's Bluff. The settlement was expanded and renamed Branford in 1886, incorporated as a town in 1961, and developed around the river crossing and the roads that now bring U.S. 27 and U.S. 129 together. Steamers once hauled timber from Branford toward Cedar Key, and Captain Robert Ivey built boats here, including the Belle of the Suwannee.

Today the river still supplies the town's clearest orientation, with the Suwannee River Greenway beginning about three miles north and extending toward the Ichetucknee River. Branford is served by the Suwannee County School District, while the surrounding springs and caves support the area's outdoor and diving culture. A park named for Captain Ivey keeps the riverboat era in the present map, and the old ferry story shows why the town developed at this bend. Branford's local clue is the handoff from ferry crossing to highway junction, with the Suwannee remaining the through-line.
