Brantley, AL

Brantley sits on high ground north of the Conecuh River in Crenshaw County, with its story tied to the railroad and the timber country around it. The town took shape after a Central of Georgia Railway line was surveyed between Troy and Searight. The Brantley Land Company laid out the settlement, and Brantley incorporated in 1891. Earlier names such as Sasserville and Marcus belong to the town’s backstory, while the Brantley Historic District preserves pieces of the older street pattern and buildings.

Today, Brantley’s daily orbit includes the town hall, library, churches, local businesses, and Brantley High School within the Crenshaw County school system. U.S. 29, State Route 15, and U.S. 331 connect the town to nearby communities, but the Conecuh landscape remains close at hand. The railroad-era plan and the surrounding pine-country economy give Brantley a distinct south-central Alabama shape: a small county town whose institutions grew around transportation, schools, and river-country roads. The result is a place where old rail lines and present-day county routines still occupy the same compact setting.
