About Brent

Brent is a Sequoyah County census-designated place south of Sallisaw, with 760 residents in the 2020 census. It lies in eastern Oklahoma near the Arkansas River and within the Fort Smith metropolitan area. The local roads run through wooded hills, pasture, and scattered homes, with Sallisaw supplying county services and the river shaping the older travel map. Brent’s name comes from the Brent Ferry, a crossing on the nearby Arkansas River.

The community sits in land that was part of the old Indian Territory, in District 11 before Oklahoma statehood. Its post office opened on May 6, 1896, and closed in 1929, leaving the Brent name attached to the settlement even after mail service moved elsewhere. Today the CDP is a rural Arkansas River community, with the ferry story, the Sallisaw connection, and the Fort Smith regional orbit all close by. Brent is an Oklahoma place where an old river crossing, an Indian Territory district, a vanished post office, and wooded Sequoyah County roads meet.
