Bressler, PA

Bressler is a census-designated place in the southwestern part of Swatara Township, just southeast of Harrisburg. It sits in southern Dauphin County within the Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan area, close to Steelton, Enhaut, and Oberlin. For the 2010 census, Bressler was counted separately after the former Bressler-Enhaut-Oberlin CDP was divided into three places. That split leaves the community as one piece of a larger township landscape even while it has its own name and census boundary.

Swatara Township supplies the longer history. The township separated from Lower Paxton in 1799, and an 1875 atlas already showed Bressler among a string of named villages that included Churchville, New Benton, Highland Village, and Oberlin. The farms and wheat-and-corn fields recorded in that older landscape later gave way to neighborhoods and the roads tied into Harrisburg’s southern edge. Bressler’s local identity is therefore closely tied to its township setting: a named village with a downtown area, surrounded by the layered communities of Swatara and the Susquehanna corridor. It is close to the capital region without being part of Harrisburg proper.
