Bridgeport, WA

Bridgeport is a Douglas County city on the Columbia River, immediately beside Rufus Woods Lake and near Chief Joseph Dam. The 2020 census counted 2,141 residents. The settlement began as Westfield in the late nineteenth century, then developers bought the town in 1892 and renamed it Bridgeport. Chinese miners were among the early arrivals along the Columbia, and the river has remained the organizing line. The city has more than a mile of waterfront within its limits, with the Okanogan County border just across the reservoir.

Chief Joseph Dam changed Bridgeport's scale in the mid-20th century. Construction began in 1949, the first generating units came online in 1955, and the dam created a 51-mile reservoir used for hydropower, irrigation, fishing, boating, and camping. Agriculture remains visible around town in the apple and cherry orchards, while Bridgeport State Park and Marina Park put the lake into everyday local geography. The bridge and the dam tell the whole story: a river crossing became a town, then a hydroelectric and irrigation project remade the shoreline.
