Brighton, IL

Brighton sits across a county line, with most of the village in Macoupin County and a smaller part in Jersey County. The 2020 census counted 2,221 residents, and the modern village carries the shape of a settlement that began when Illinois prairie was being turned into farms. Oliver Brown and William Cowan arrived from Carrollton in 1826 and built a small cabin near the present Betsey Ann Park. A competing settlement called Bristol appeared nearby, and the two communities merged under the Brighton name in 1837.

That bit of naming drama is still the fun way into Brighton’s history. The final name honored Brighton, Massachusetts, tying a southwestern Illinois village to an English place-name carried across New England. Brighton organized as a town in 1869 and incorporated as a village in 1886, while the central area remained a practical community of homes, local businesses, schools, and village services. The Betsey Ann Band Stand marks the early cabin area, giving the story a physical point of reference. Brighton feels like a borderland village in the best geographic sense: two counties, several layers of settlement, and one shared town center.
