Brilliant, AL

Brilliant is a quiet town of about 1,100 residents tucked into southeastern Marion County, roughly fifteen miles southeast of Hamilton. The settlement was originally called Boston, named after the local Bostick family, but coal mining transformed the area around the turn of the twentieth century. When the growing community applied for its own post office, postal officials discovered Alabama already had a town with that name. The community solved the mix-up by renaming itself Brilliant, taking the title from the mining company that helped build the area.

You can still spot pieces of that heritage throughout town, from the 1906 Dickinson Store on Main Street to the historic railroad depot and churches built by early mining families.
