Britton, SD

Britton is the Marshall County seat in northeastern South Dakota, with 1,215 residents in the 2020 census. The city grew around a Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad stop established in 1884, then became county seat of newly formed Marshall County in 1885. The courthouse, city offices, Britton Journal, and Britton-Hecla schools give the small city a civic role beyond its population. The school district keeps an elementary school and high school on the same campus, tying town and surrounding farm country together.

Britton was named for Isaac Britton, a railroad official, and received city rights in 1906. Its main streets still follow the pattern of a prairie rail town: courthouse and businesses at the center, homes spreading toward open fields, and railroad history underneath the city's founding story. The weekly newspaper keeps a local print voice in circulation, while the Marshall County Prayer Rock Museum connects Britton to the region's older human history.
