Brocton, NY

Brocton is a Chautauqua County village in the town of Portland, with US 20 running through the center and Lake Erie State Park a short drive north. Captain James Dunn settled the area in 1805, and the village incorporated in 1894. The name combines Brockway and Minton, two local family names, but grapes are what made Brocton's story travel: after the Civil War, vineyards spread across the lake plain and wine houses followed.

The village's green double arch at the main intersection is a handy marker for that history, while Lake Avenue points toward the state park's beach, campground, and lakefront. The old wine and railroad stories still sit side by side on the village map. Brocton Central School serves children from pre-K through grade 12, and the village still handles water, sewer, electric, and highway services for the community. This is western New York's grape-country pattern in miniature: a village street grid, old family names, farm fields, and Lake Erie waiting at the end of the road.
