About Brodhead

Brodhead is a Rockcastle County city at the headwaters of the Dix River, with an old stage stop and a railroad name-change at its center. The place began as Stigalls Station, a stagecoach stop and drover's stable. When the Louisville & Nashville Railroad reached the area in early 1868, the station was renamed Brodhead and the town grew around the tracks. U.S. 150 still passes through the western side, while the river begins here in the hills northwest of Mount Vernon. The unusual place name is part of the town's local character, but the map tells the bigger story: a crossing point that moved from stagecoaches to rail and kept its riverhead.
