Bromley, KY

Bromley is a Kenton County city on the south bank of the Ohio River, between Ludlow and Villa Hills in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The settlement began with an 1784 land grant, and Charles Collins laid out a town on part of the old property in 1848, naming it after Bromley, England. Route 8 grew from the Dry Creek Turnpike, which opened a road toward Ludlow and Covington. Kentucky approved Bromley's incorporation on May 23, 1890, and the city has been shaped ever since by river, road, and neighboring-city connections.

Flooding is part of Bromley's local memory. The 1937 Ohio River flood covered much of the city, cut off the roads to Ludlow, and led to Highwater Road as an escape route. The Bromley Volunteer Fire Department, established in 1900 after another destructive fire, remains one of the town's enduring institutions. Bromley students attend River Ridge School, Turkey Foot Middle School, and Dixie Heights High School, while the city's churches and annual block party keep the calendar local. Bromley is a small river city with a very old house, a hard flood lesson, and a road network built around getting in and out.
