Brookfield, MA

Brookfield is a Worcester County town along the Quaboag River, with 3,439 residents at the 2020 census. Europeans settled here in 1660, and the town was incorporated in 1718 after beginning as part of the Quaboag Plantation lands. The river and its ponds gave Brookfield a working spine: mills, farms, and later a railroad route all used the same valley. The Western Railroad arrived in 1839, and Brookfield Center grew around the depot and the Common.

The town still has that layered New England map. Brookfield Elementary serves younger students, while older students attend Tantasqua Regional schools in Sturbridge. The Quaboag River, Quaboag Pond, and Quacumquasit Pond shape the southern and eastern edges, with wetlands and protected land keeping pieces of the old landscape in view. Brookfield Common Historic District holds onto the civic center, while dairy farms, forests, and lakeside homes fill in the spaces between villages. It is an old town, but the river valley remains the simplest way to understand how its pieces fit together.
