Brookneal, VA

Brookneal is an incorporated Campbell County town on the Staunton River, founded in 1802 at a ferry crossing that linked Campbell, Halifax, and Charlotte counties. Patrick Henry chose the river location, and the early trade was practical: wooden batteaux carried tobacco and other farm goods toward markets. US 501 still runs through town today, but the river is why Brookneal became a regional commerce center before the highways.

The business center later followed the railroads. The Lynchburg & Durham Railroad reached Brookneal in 1890 and the Virginia Railway in 1910; a 1912 fire destroyed much of downtown, leading to the multi-story masonry buildings that remain in the Brookneal Historic District. Timber, furniture, flooring, and tobacco warehouses followed. Today the town has a Staunton River boat ramp, recreation park, Brookneal Elementary, and William Campbell Combined School, with Patrick Henry's Red Hill nearby. Brookneal's local shorthand is ferry town, tobacco market, railroad town, and river launch all in one Campbell County place.
