Brownsville, KY

Brownsville was chosen as Edmonson County's seat in 1828, when commissioners selected a 100-acre tract at Pt. Pleasant on the Green River. The lots were laid out around what became Main and Washington streets, and the city still works as the county's administrative center. Its courthouse square remains the center of local government. Brownsville sits just southwest of the Green and Nolin River confluence, about thirty miles northeast of Bowling Green, with Kentucky 70 and 259 carrying the road traffic through town.

The city's other defining neighbor is Mammoth Cave National Park. Brownsville lies outside the park's western side, with Brownsville Road running toward the park and Houchin Ferry access; the Green River and Nolin River put water into the county-seat map as well. Edmonson County Schools serve local students, and Brownsville's Kentucky Trail Town designation connects the city's streets with the cave country, river routes, and nearby trail systems. The place is a courthouse town with a river origin and a national park at its edge.
