Brownsville, MN

Brownsville sits on the Mississippi River in Houston County, tucked between steep bluffs and the backwaters of southeast Minnesota. The city was first established in Minnesota Territory in 1848, when Job Brown chose the river site; he and his brother Charles platted the town in 1854. About 566 people lived here in 2020. Highway 26 and County Road 3 bring the river settlement into the regional road network, while the old landing places keep the town's orientation pointed toward the water.

In the nineteenth century, Brownsville handled river traffic, fishing, clamming, and a busy landing. By 1870, it had around 1,500 people and 50 businesses, a scale that helps make sense of the surviving older buildings and stories. The old school site became the Community Center in 1993, and a Historical Room keeps local material close at hand. Today Wildcat Landing offers a public boat launch and campsites, Lawrence Lake has a marina, and migrating tundra swans bring a seasonal spectacle to the river. Brownsville still feels like a place built with one eye on the bluffs and one on the Mississippi.
