Brownsville, WI

Brownsville began as Thetis Station, a railroad stop tied to the narrow-gauge line running toward Fond du Lac and Iron Ridge. In April 1878 it took the name of Alfred D. Brown, an English immigrant and early farmer who also became one of the village's first merchants. Today the village sits on WIS 49, a few miles from I-41 and within reach of US 151, so highway signs and old rail history meet in the same compact place.

Kummel Creek runs through Brownsville toward the Rock River, while Horicon Marsh lies about five miles west and gives the village its big natural reference point. The Brownsville Public Library and Brownsville Fire Company are the sort of institutions that keep a small Wisconsin community stitched together; the fire company traces its local service back to 1891 and is now planning a new station. Add baseball, brats, Main Street errands, and marsh-bound drives, and Brownsville feels like a practical crossroads with a strong Dodge County accent.
