Brownton, MN

Brownton is a city in McLeod County, Minnesota, on the south side of Buffalo Creek in the Crow River watershed. The 2020 census counted 731 residents. U.S. Highway 212 passes just south of town, leading east toward Glencoe, the county seat, and west toward Stewart. The creek, highway, farm fields, and prairie peninsula landscape place Brownton in the transition between southern Minnesota’s open farmland and the wooded country farther north.

Brownton was platted in 1877 and named for Alonzo L. Brown, the original owner of the town site. The city’s history also reaches back to the settlement era around Buffalo Creek, including the painful story of the U.S.-Dakota War. Buffalo Creek remains the city’s clearest geographic thread through the county. Local civic life follows the highway, creek, and farm roads, with Glencoe handling county-seat business nearby. Brownton is a small McLeod County city with a creek-side setting, a Brown family name, and a direct line to the wider Crow River watershed.
