Broxton, GA

Broxton is a Coffee County city in Georgia, chartered in 1904 and incorporated in 1932. The 2020 census counted 1,060 residents. U.S. Route 441 runs through town, linking Broxton with Douglas to the south and McRae to the north. The city sits in south Georgia’s wiregrass and pine country, but the local landmark that gives Broxton its widest reach lies ten miles north along Rocky Creek: Broxton Rocks.

Broxton Rocks is a sandstone landscape of outcrops, blackwater streams, longleaf pine and wiregrass, and pitcherplant seepage bogs. More than 500 plant species grow there, along with gopher tortoises, indigo snakes, birds, and other wildlife; the exposed rocks and fragile plant communities have made visits carefully limited. Back in town, Coffee County schools and the U.S. 441 corridor keep Broxton tied to the surrounding rural area. Broxton is a small south Georgia city whose name points in two directions at once: a working highway town and a rare ecological site shaped by Rocky Creek.
