Buckhead, GA (Town)

Buckhead's 1910 brick Town Hall and Jail began as the town jail before becoming a town hall, and the building remains part of the Buckhead Historic District. It is one of two historic properties owned by the town. That single structure gives Morgan County's Buckhead a visible civic center, even as the surrounding land reaches toward Lake Oconee and the Oconee and Apalachee rivers. The town's rail-era core began in 1908, when Buckhead served as a stop between Atlanta and Augusta. Its name is tied to a spring and branch remembered in local history.

Lake Oconee gives Buckhead a second orientation. Two marinas serve boating and fishing, and the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art houses over 800 works by the German-born artist. County planning treats downtown Buckhead, local businesses, and lake access as related pieces of the community's future. For residents, the map comes together through the preserved civic building, the old railroad center, and the lakeshore beyond the main street.
