Buckley, MI

Buckley is a Wexford County village just south of the Grand Traverse County line, built in a landscape of timber, farms, and old routes through northern Michigan. The area was crossed by what is now called the Old Indian Trail, connecting the Cadillac and Traverse City country. In the late 1800s Edward Buckley expanded a lumber business and helped bring the railroad into the area; Buckley was incorporated in 1907 and grew around the mill, depot, and timber trade. The railroad eventually reached Traverse City, but the forests were cut over, the mill burned in 1920, and the last train ran in 1925.

That gives Buckley a clear before-and-after story. The village is no longer a timber shipping point, yet its streets and name still come from that railroad-and-lumber chapter. Mesick is nearby to the south, Cadillac is about 20 miles southeast, and Traverse City is within the wider regional orbit. The village’s place in Hanover Township keeps the municipal scale small, while farmland, woods, and old transportation lines make the setting easy to picture. Buckley is a northern Michigan village where the lumber era ended, but the route it created still organizes the community.
