About Buena Vista

Buena Vista is Marion County's courthouse town, sitting in the Flint River watershed in west-central Georgia. Settlers arrived in 1818, a post office opened in 1837, and the place first went by Pea Ridge. Residents later chose Buena Vista to honor Zachary Taylor's victory in the Mexican-American War. The county seat moved here from Tazewell in 1850, turning the settlement into the political center of Marion County.

The 1850 courthouse still sits at the center of Courthouse Square, built from local brick and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic storefronts, murals, and city services gather around it, while Georgia Routes 26 and 41 carry traffic through town toward Columbus, Ellaville, and other west Georgia communities. Marion County School District operates primary and middle/high schools, keeping education local. Buena Vista's daily map is a courthouse square surrounded by pine country, farmland, and Flint watershed streams. County offices and courthouse traffic shape the town's workweek, especially on court and election days.
