Buffalo Center, IA

Buffalo Center sits seven miles south of the Minnesota line in northern Winnebago County. Its name refers to the midpoint between the north and south forks of Buffalo Creek, but the town moved north when the Chicago and Iowa Western Railroad laid out its line. The 1892 town grew on ground so wet that residents dredged and tiled it; local history remembers Howard Pomeroy mowing wheat to mark the future streets. A hardware store and blacksmith shop were among the first businesses. Fires, a tornado, and hard blizzards—including the Armistice Day blizzard of 1940—left their mark.

Education has been part of Buffalo Center's story for generations. The town opened what it calls the first consolidated school west of the Mississippi on August 23, 1897. In 1996, Buffalo Center became the host community for North Iowa Community School after neighboring districts joined together; its K–12 campus serves students from Buffalo Center, Lakota, Rake, and Thompson. The 2020 census counted 857 residents, giving the town a school-centered role across the surrounding farm country.
