Buffalo Gap, TX

Buffalo Gap sits in a natural break through the Callahan Divide south of Abilene, a position that shaped the town’s name and its earliest history. In the early 1870s, Buffalo Soldiers came through the gap to hunt bison herds moving from Montana into Texas. The route made the settlement a recognizable stop in Taylor County, and the town became part of the Abilene metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 543 residents, with Jim Ned Consolidated Independent School District serving Buffalo Gap, Tuscola, and Lawn.

At the center of town, Buffalo Gap Historic Village preserves the original Taylor County Courthouse along with actual West Texas buildings from roughly 1875 to 1925. Ernest “Ernie” Wilson bought the courthouse in 1956 and began assembling the collection that became the museum. The old courthouse, the former depot, and the nearby live-oak landscape make the town’s past visible without separating it from present-day life. Buffalo Gap remains a small community on the Abilene side of the divide, where a passage through the hills became a name, a town, and a place for West Texas history.
