Buford, OH

Buford is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in central Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio, with 306 people at the 2020 census. It was platted in 1834 and named for the maiden name of a first settler's wife. Three state routes meet here: 134, 138, and 321. They point north to Lynchburg, south to Sardinia, northeast to Hillsboro, the Highland County seat, and southeast to Mowrystown. The route map gives Buford the shape of a rural crossroads within southwestern Highland County.

Several small landmarks give that crossroads its current shape. The former Buford Elementary and High School is now associated with Clay Township Community Park, and the local map also includes Buford Community Church, Buford Church of Christ, Buford Cemetery, a community center and fire station, and a bicentennial marker. The Buford community has held Memorial Day services at the cemetery, and the Lynchburg-Clay Local School District includes Buford in its service area. The local scoop is a Highland County place where roads, a former school site, churches, and a cemetery do most of the town's visible work.
