Bulls Gap, TN

Bulls Gap is a Hawkins County town set in the mountain pass that gave it its name. John Bull, a gunsmith who settled here in 1794, supplied the older name, and the community later served as a railroad junction under names such as Rogersville Junction and Bulls Gap Junction. The gap also saw a Civil War fight in November 1864, when the Battle of Bull’s Gap brought the strategic crossing into the national record. U.S. 11E now carries the highway traffic through town, on the route that was later named the Archie Campbell Highway.

The downtown is listed as the Bulls Gap Historic District, with the old commercial streets and the former 1900 train station now used as a museum and town hall. John Bull’s house is preserved as another local landmark. The railroad is less central to daily work than it once was, but the town still sits at a useful break in the mountain roads, with Hawkins County services, small businesses, and the Tri-Cities region within reach. Bulls Gap has the feel of a place built around a pass: a few blocks of civic history, a highway doing the modern connecting, and the mountain gap still dictating the map.
