About Buna

Buna began as a Beaumont Lumber Company logging camp in southern Jasper County. The site was first called Carrolla for the Carroll family, then renamed for Buna Corley, a cousin of the lumbermen. The company built a tram road from Buna to Ford’s Bluff on the Neches River, tying the timber operation to the river and the wider mill network. Today the community remains in the southern county along U.S. 96, with Buna ISD and Buna High School’s Cougars keeping the school connection visible. The local shorthand is Big Thicket timber, Neches River routes, and a town named for a woman in the lumber family.
