Bunker Hill, IL

Bunker Hill is a Macoupin County city in southern Illinois. The 2020 census counted 1,630 residents. Bunker Hill CUSD #8, city hall, Mae Whitaker Park, water service, the city cemetery, and Main Street give the city its practical center. The Bunker Hill Historical Society and Museum occupies a former library and city hall building on East Warren Street, while Carlinville, Alton, and the St. Louis area handle larger regional trips.

New England settlers laid out Bunker Hill in 1835 and named it for the Revolutionary War battle. The railroad later brought growth and helped the city develop its schools, businesses, and connections to nearby towns. The historical museum preserves stories of local churches, cemeteries, schools, the former Bunker Hill Military Academy, the 1948 tornado, and an early twentieth-century doctor's office. The Soldiers Monument in the city cemetery dates to 1866, giving the town another public marker of its older civic life. Today, school events, park work, water service, museum hours, and county roads keep Bunker Hill's history tied to ordinary routines.
