Burgin, KY

Burgin is a Mercer County city about three miles west of Harrodsburg, sitting where Kentucky 33 and 152 meet near the head of the Cane Run branch of the Dix River. Before the city had its current name, the place was called Cane Run. The Cincinnati Southern Railroad obtained a right-of-way from landowner Temple Burgin in 1874 and opened Burgin Station; the town followed in 1877 and incorporated in 1878. Even the post office tells a little story: it opened as Bergen and changed to Burgin in 1886.

Most of Burgin's public buildings sit just west of the highway junction, so the town still reads as a compact crossroads. Burgin Independent Schools serve local students, the water department reaches beyond the city limits, and Harrodsburg and Danville handle larger regional connections. The railroad is still present in the town's memory, but the everyday map is roads, Cane Run, the Dix River, and the buildings around KY 152 and KY 33. Burgin is small, but its name, station, and road layout all come from a clear sequence of land, rail, and local government.
