Burke Centre, VA

Burke Centre is a master-planned community divided into five distinct neighborhoods: The Commons, The Landings, The Oaks, The Ponds, and The Woods. Built across 1,700 wooded acres starting in the late 1970s, the area was laid out so every single cluster gets its own community center, pool, tennis courts, and walking paths. The Burke Centre Conservancy maintains all of the shared green spaces and amenities, keeping the surroundings beautifully landscaped. The Burke Centre Library serves as one of the favorite local gathering spots. Built like a modern timber lodge right off Fairfax County Parkway, it features floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over quiet woods and native wildlife. It is the only branch in Fairfax County with a drive-through window for picking up holds and dropping off books, which makes running errands remarkably easy. Inside, visitors take advantage of quiet study rooms, a community seed library, an extensive Korean-language collection, and an outdoor pavilion called the Book Burrow for children's storytimes and weekend events.

Commuting is another major draw, largely thanks to the Burke Centre VRE station right in town. Weekday trains on the Virginia Railway Express Manassas Line give residents a direct, comfortable ride into Alexandria and downtown Washington, DC. The station features a large park-and-ride garage with over 1,500 free spaces, and Fairfax Connector buses connect directly to the Silver Line and major job centers in Tysons. Having commuter rail right down the street offers an easy alternative to sitting on the region's busy highways.

Spanning nearly 900 acres, the park is famous for its scenic 4.7-mile trail looping the water, making it a go-to spot for morning jogs, dog walks, and weekend bike rides. You can rent a rowboat, go fishing, play a round of disc golf, or bring kids out for the vintage carousel, miniature train, and mini-golf course.
