Burke Centre, VA

Burke Centre was laid out around shared facilities that still organize much of the week. The planned development at the core of the census-designated place covers about 1,700 acres, and its network of community centers, pools, courts, playing areas, and paths dates to the original design; the first households arrived in 1977. Those facilities are managed through the Burke Centre Conservancy, giving residents a second layer of local administration beyond Fairfax County. Nearby Burke Lake Park broadens the recreation choices considerably. Its 888 acres include a 4.7-mile path around the lake, fishing and boating, campgrounds, disc golf, a miniature train, a carousel, and a playground. The result is a suburb where neighborhood recreation is distributed among small shared sites while a large county park handles longer outings. Commuting infrastructure is just as visible. Burke Centre station lies on Virginia Railway Express's Manassas Line, with weekday trains serving Alexandria and Washington.

Its county park-and-ride has 1,510 free spaces, and Fairfax Connector Route 495 links the station with Tysons Metrorail station. For the 2020-through-2024 estimate period, the mean trip to work was 31.6 minutes, so the rail platform and connecting bus address a substantial part of ordinary travel rather than functioning only as occasional amenities. At the 2020 count, Burke Centre contained 17,518 residents within 3.13 square miles. In that same estimate period, 80.7 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median value of those homes was $641,700, and median gross rent was $2,515. Nearly three in ten residents age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Burke Centre's current character comes from the overlap of planned common spaces, high-cost housing, a major commuter hub, and immediate access to woods and water.
