Burlingame is centered around two distinct walkable commercial districts, each anchored by its own Caltrain station. Downtown Burlingame Avenue, known locally as "The Ave," is the bustling main strip filled with trendy boutiques, outdoor cafes, upscale dining, and everyday essentials. Further north, Broadway offers a cozy, small-town atmosphere with longtime family-owned bakeries, casual diners, and neighborhood grocery spots. Heading west from El Camino Real, quiet residential streets wind up into leafy hills with classic Peninsula homes. To the east, across Highway 101, you will find modern tech campuses, biotech offices, and bayfront hotels close to San Francisco International Airport.

Along the bay, the shoreline features paved segments of the San Francisco Bay Trail where locals jog, bike, and watch planes land across the water. While reaching the waterfront usually means driving across the freeway from the residential neighborhoods, it gives you direct access to wide open water views and bay breezes. Burlingame earned its nickname as the "City of Trees" early in its history. In the late nineteenth century, landowners commissioned legendary Golden Gate Park designer John McLaren to line El Camino Real with thousands of stately eucalyptus and elm trees, creating the lush green canopy that still defines the town today.

Growth boomed after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake when families relocated south to the Peninsula for sunshine and suburban space. Today, the town retains that historic charm alongside top-rated schools and easy commutes to both Silicon Valley and San Francisco. Near downtown, Washington Park serves as the community's primary gathering place. Shaded by heritage trees, the park features a modernized recreation center, tennis and pickleball courts, open lawns, and a historic 1930s baseball grandstand that still hosts lively local games throughout the spring and summer.
