Burlington got its start in the 1850s as Company Shops, a bustling repair hub for the North Carolina Railroad. When the rail yard moved on, textile and hosiery mills stepped in, shaping the city's early neighborhoods and giving it its modern name. Today, Burlington is a welcoming community of over 60,000 residents set right in the heart of the North Carolina Piedmont. The restored Historic Depot still anchors a walkable downtown, while the rest of the city spreads outward into quiet residential streets, shopping corridors, and scenic parks.

Over the decades, the local economy shifted from traditional textile production to healthcare and modern industry. Burlington is the global headquarters of Labcorp, which grew from a modest local lab into one of the largest medical testing networks in the world. Along with healthcare and clinical research, a steady mix of advanced manufacturing, logistics, and retail provides diverse job opportunities. Its convenient spot along the I-40 and I-85 corridor also makes Burlington an attractive home base for commuters traveling to Greensboro, Durham, or Chapel Hill.

For outdoor fun, Burlington City Park is a beloved local favorite. Its centerpiece is an antique Dentzel carousel from the early 1900s, carefully restored with hand-carved animals and housed in a bright glass pavilion. Families visit year-round for the miniature train, children's amusement rides, playgrounds, tennis courts, and walking paths. Every spring, the park hosts the annual Carousel Festival, drawing neighbors together for a weekend of live music, craft booths, local food, and free rides.

Downtown comes alive from spring through fall with monthly 4th Friday street festivals featuring food trucks and local musicians, while the historic Paramount Theater stages plays and concerts throughout the year. Nature lovers head just north of town to Lake Cammack, an 800-acre reservoir ideal for kayaking, bass fishing, and trail hiking.
