Burlington, NC

Burlington began with one kind of machinery and now keeps another turning as a civic landmark. The North Carolina Railroad established its repair and maintenance complex here in 1854, creating a settlement called Company Shops. When those shops closed in 1886, local textile and hosiery businesses supplied a new economic base, and residents renamed the town Burlington. The city was incorporated under that name in 1893. Its population has continued to grow, from 57,303 in 2020 to an estimated 61,496 in 2025. Industry has changed again: Labcorp, a global laboratory-services company reporting about 71,000 employees in 2026, maintains its corporate headquarters on South Spring Street in Burlington. The mechanical landmark is Burlington City Park's three-row Dentzel Menagerie Carousel, built around 1906-1910 and purchased by the city in 1948. A 2019-2022 restoration repaired its drive and 46 hand-carved animals, added an accessible chariot, and moved it into a new house above the floodplain; glass walls now allow weekend operation throughout the year.

The surrounding park combines a miniature train and children's rides with an inclusive playground, aquatic and splash facilities, tennis and pickleball courts, ballfields, a senior center, and walking paths. Its 35th Carousel Festival filled two days in May 2026 with live music, local crafts, food, children's activities, and free rides. Downtown has a separate rhythm: 4th Fridays bring music and food trucks from May through September, while the city-operated Paramount Theater hosts more than 200 nights of productions in a typical year. Recreation also reaches beyond those two centers. Burlington runs three recreational lakes with four marinas, guided hikes and seasonal paddles, garden classes, and trail-building sessions; its 2026 Park & Play van delivered free games, sports, and crafts directly to five neighborhood communities.
