About Burlington

Burlington is Ward County’s old river-fork town, founded in 1883 where the Des Lacs and Mouse rivers meet. The first camp near today’s Burlington Park became the starting point for a town that also saw the county’s first school, newspaper, store, and lignite mining. Burlington briefly served as Ward County seat in the 1880s, and its school history now overlaps with nearby Des Lacs through United Public School District 7 and Des Lacs-Burlington High School. The local shorthand is a town built at two rivers, with lignite under the early story.
