Burneyville, OK

Burneyville is an unincorporated Love County community on State Highway 96, running south toward the north bank of the Red River. Its post office dates to 1879, and its name comes from David C. Burney, a Chickasaw farmer who settled here with his wife, Lucy James Burney. The family traveled from northern Mississippi to Indian Territory by steamboat up the Red River in 1844, a detail that makes the river feel like part of the town's front door, not a line at the edge of the map.

The old Burneyville School, once called Red River School, began as a subscription school in the 1880s and closed in 1957. Agriculture still gives the area its working vocabulary. Noble Research Institute's Red River Ranch lies along the river and has supported demonstration work in grazing, crops, pecans, irrigation, and wildlife; current projects focus on regenerative ranching and soil health. Marietta handles county-seat services a few miles north, while the river and Highway 96 keep Burneyville pointed south.
