Burwell, NE

Burwell sits at the meeting of the Calamus and North Loup rivers in the Nebraska Sandhills. Its first post office was called The Forks in 1875, a name that fit the water junction; the settlement was renamed Burwell and incorporated as a village in 1884. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad reached town from Ord in 1887, turning the river crossing into Garfield County's main transportation point. Burwell eventually became the county seat, and the courthouse still gives the city a countywide role.

Today State Highways 11 and 91 meet near town, while Highway 96 follows the north side of Calamus Reservoir. Water and open grassland drive the visitor map: Calamus Lake, Sandhills wildlife, hunting outfits, and Nebraska's Big Rodeo all draw people toward Burwell. The Garfield County Historical Museum fills more than thirty rooms with local artifacts, adding a deep memory layer to a city known for cattle, farm country, and summer events. Burwell's present-day rhythm moves between courthouse work, reservoir recreation, rodeo week, and the river valleys that brought the town together.
