Butler, GA

Butler is the Taylor County seat, a Georgia city of 1,881 residents at the 2020 census. Its location was chosen around the Central of Georgia Railway's Fifty Mile Station, roughly halfway between Macon and Columbus; the railway reached the area around 1850 and still carries three to four Norfolk Southern trains a day. The courthouse square and surrounding Main, Broad, and Ivey streets form the Butler Downtown Historic District, where one- and two-story brick buildings keep the county-seat pattern visible.

That old rail-and-courthouse center still shares the city with everyday public services. Butler City Hall handles water, sewer, streets, garbage, and public safety, while Taylor County Schools is based on Mulberry Street and lists primary, upper elementary, middle, and high schools. County offices and court business add another regular layer of activity. Butler is a working county seat: trains pass the historic core, county business gathers around the courthouse, and school and municipal systems give the center its present rhythm.
