Butlertown, MD

Butlertown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kent County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It formed sometime after 1877, and the name is associated with Worton Point in the county’s older records. The 2020 census counted 520 residents. Kent County Public Schools serves the community, and Kent County High School stands within the CDP even though its mailing address is in nearby Worton. That school placement gives Butlertown a civic institution larger than the settlement’s own compact footprint.

Butlertown also belongs to Kent County’s African American education history. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Worton Point—identified with Butlertown in county historical work—was a predominantly Black community with a local school serving Black children. County history places Butlertown among the Eastern Shore communities whose schools carried local life. The old community and the current high school occupy different eras of the same county map. Butlertown is a small Eastern Shore place whose present-day school connection sits beside a longer story of Black community life, rural roads, and county education.
