Buttzville, NJ

Buttzville is a Warren County community in White Township, set where US 46 meets the northern end of NJ 31. Michael Robert Buttz founded the settlement in 1839 and gave it the family name through his son, Liam Oakes Buttz. White Township's farmland plan still places Buttzville among the township's two small villages. The road picture is unusually specific: Buttzville Road crosses the Pequest River on a one-lane truss bridge built in 1902, just south of Route 46.

Route 46 supplies the present-day landmarks. Hot Dog Johnny's at 333 Route 46 is a long-running roadside stop beside the Pequest, while Buttzville United Methodist Church at 4 Green Pond Road remains a local gathering point. White Township's municipal building on County Route 519 handles the public business for the area, so the place is oriented through the highway, river crossing, church, and roadside stand. The Buttzville name sits on a small piece of White Township, but its character comes from the way those pieces line up along the Pequest valley.
