About Byng
Byng is a Pontotoc County town that began in 1917 with a post office and power plant named for British World War I general Julian Byng. Its earlier map included Tyrola, a community with a railroad depot that was partly washed away by the South Canadian River flood of 1914, and New Bethel to the north. The school districts joined, and the name Byng took hold in 1929. Byng is an Oklahoma place assembled from a post office, a power plant, two older communities, and a river that could move the map.
