Byrdstown, TN

Byrdstown is Pickett County’s seat, established in 1879 when the county was carved out and incorporated in 1917. The town sits on the Highland Rim a few miles south of Kentucky, with Tennessee 325 carrying the main east-west route and Tennessee 111 pointing north toward the state line. Its name honors Colonel Byrd, who backed the new county.

Water and county history are the two big local reference points. Byrdstown is south of the Wolf River, north of the Obey River, and east of Dale Hollow Lake, where those waters come together. The 1935 Pickett County Courthouse marks the county-seat story, while Cordell Hull’s birthplace lies just west of town and Dale Hollow’s coves begin a short drive away. That makes Byrdstown feel less like a through-stop than the place where Pickett County’s government, lake roads, and older family histories meet.
