About Cañon

Cañon is a Sandoval County census-designated place along New Mexico State Road 4 in the Jemez Valley. The community was noted by an 1849 expedition, had a post office for a short period in 1902 and 1903, and now shares the valley's institutions: Jemez Valley Public Schools, the community center, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, built in 1928. State Road 4 ties Cañon to the rest of the valley and the mountain country beyond, while the settlement's name marks a small cluster along that route. Cañon is a New Mexico place whose story is carried by church, school, road, and the wider Jemez Valley.
