Calico Rock, AR

Calico Rock is an Izard County city on the north bank of the White River. The 2020 census counted 888 residents. Pineville lies to the north, while the river, old Main Street, and the railroad corridor still give the city its clearest physical markers. Calico Rock Public Schools, Community Medical Center of Izard County, and local manufacturing are among the institutions anchoring present-day life in town.

The settlement began as a steamboat landing called Calico Landing, serving boats on the upper White River. Its name came from the red, gray, blue, black, and orange bands in the bluffs above the water, which looked like calico cloth. Railroad construction began along the river in 1902, bringing crews, commerce, and a new reason for the town to face the tracks as well as the landing. Calico Rock still carries both histories: a river crossing and trading point, plus a small Ozark city organized around schools, health care, work, and the old commercial street.
