California serves as the main retail and residential hub for this corner of Southern Maryland. Most daily errands happen along Route 235, known locally as Three Notch Road, where you will find the area's primary shopping centers, grocery stores, and casual restaurants. Route 4 cuts across town to connect drivers to the Thomas Johnson Bridge and Calvert County to the north, while Route 235 leads south toward Lexington Park. Because so much shopping and commuting flows through the same main intersection, traffic can get backed up during morning and evening rush hours. The county continues to expand FDR Boulevard to create an easier local bypass, giving residents a smoother alternative for getting around town.

Myrtle Point Park borders the Patuxent River on the east side of town, featuring quiet wooded trails, secluded shoreline beaches, and spots for crabbing and kayaking. Runners and cyclists also take advantage of the paved Three Notch Trail, which follows a historic railroad corridor north through the county. For dining and weekend entertainment, locals often take the quick drive across the bridge to Solomons Island to enjoy waterfront boardwalks and seafood spots. California blends everyday suburban convenience with easy access to Southern Maryland's coastal charm.
