Callaway, NE

Callaway was platted in 1885, and the name ties the Custer County village to S. R. Callaway, a general manager of the Union Pacific Railroad. The town’s founding was part of a hard-fought central Nebraska town-site contest, so the railroad connection was never a background detail; it was the reason people argued over where the community should stand. Callaway emerged with a main street, a depot-era economy, and a name that carried the railroad’s reach into the South Loup country.

Historic photographs and records from the early town include the Grand Pacific Hotel, built around 1889–90, and a Railroad Addition that filled out the settlement as more residents and businesses arrived.
